The New Year was celebrated with much fervour in Tamil Nadu with people visiting places of worship in the wee hours.
In Chennai, special masses were conducted in Santhome and Besant Nagar churches, while early morning prayers were offered at temples in Mylapore and Triplicane.
People were seen visiting Meenakshiamman Temple early in the morning in Madurai. Temples across the state held special prayers.
Devotees from other parts of the country visited the famous Christian pilgrim centre of Velankanni in Nagapattinam district, where a special mass was conducted last night.
Pilgrims thronged the pandal put up on 60,000 sq ft area in the premises of Shrine Basillica for prayers.
Celebrations in neighbouring Puducherry and nearby Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu were restrained post Cyclone Thane which hit the region on Friday. However, temples, mosques and churches in these places conducted masses.
