Chennai: One person died and six others were injured when a metal wall being lifted by a crane fell at a construction site for an underground metro rail station in Chennai this evening.
Early reports say the crane failed and the huge structure it was lifting collapsed, crushing one man. The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital.
The incident happened at the metro site near Pachaiappa College.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a compensation of Rs one lakh for the family of the person, who died and Rs 25,000 each for the six people, who were injured and are currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Last month, the scaffolding for an arm of a pillar collapsed in another part of the city. There were no casualties in that incident.
