Chennai: The plight of two young mothers who recently lost their babies in Chennai moved none other than superstar Rajinikanth's wife Latha Rajinikanth, who embarked on a mission to reunite the missing children with their parents.
Latha Rajinikanth has formed an alliance of NGOs and citizens called 'Abhayam' to reach out to such families and mount pressure on authorities to trace missing children.
"When you know somebody is crying in pain and agony it doesn't feel good inside. It is a sensitive society and every one should rise up. When everyone is leading a normal life, a child is not leading a normal life," she said.
Over 14,700 children went missing over the last five years in Tamil Nadu and 535 of them are yet to be traced. Police have declared seven of them as untraceable. Recently, the Madras High Court directed the state to compensation to such families.
"The primary reason for abduction of children is for adoption, trafficking, labour and even for medical reasons like organ transplant," Dr N Paul Sundar singh, secretary of Karunalaya, an NGO that works with street children, said.
"UNICEF estimates there are 150 million street children worldwide. This would be the 8th largest country," John Wroe, CEO of Street Child United, said.
While experts say that the country often fails missing children, Latha Rajinikanth hopes her attempt would turn into a movement and provide support to this neglected cause.
