Robbers intercept van, decamp with Rs 21 lakh

Chennai: In a second major robbery in the city within a week, four persons intercepted a vehicle and robbed Rs 21 lakh near Maduravoyal in Chennai.

The assailants intercepted a private company's van, which was returning with the day's collection late Monday night and took away the booty after threatening the driver and two others, police said.

The vehicle, which belonged to a private company which supplies food and beverages, was intercepted on the highway near Maduravoyal, they said.

"We are investigating the case. Usually in cases like this, insiders are involved. We are enquiring in all angles," Joint Commissioner, K Shankar, said.

The incident comes within a week after four persons robbed the Bank of Baroda branch near Perungudi of Rs 19 lakh on January 23.

Police is yet to make any breakthrough in the bank robbery case, even after releasing the sketches of the suspects to public.
