Chennai: A Singapore-bound passenger was fined more than Rs one lakh by customs officials at the airport in Chennai after he was found carrying cash to the tune of Rs 4.5 lakh cash, including Rs 2.5 lakh in Rs 2000 denomination, without declaring it today.
Acted on information that the man was carrying cash, the customs officials checked his hand baggage after he boarded the flight, Customs officials said.
They found Rs 2.5 lakh in Rs 2000 notes and Euros for the rest of the value.
On being questioned, the passenger said he was taking the cash for his own expenses.
Customs officials said they levied a fine of Rs 1.36 lakh since he had not declared the money.
