Chennai: The US consulate here has been closed for three days starting Monday following the protests outside its premises on the US-made anti-Islam film, it was announced.
"The US Consulate in Chennai will be closed Monday-Wednesday, September 17-19, 2012. Please check this website for further updates," was the message posted on the consulate's website.
While the consulate is silent on the reasons, it could be due to the protests in front of it by Muslim outfits against the anti-Islamic film made by an American.
On Tuesday, a Muslim organisation has planned to stage a protest outside it.
Activists belonging to Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam protested outside the consulate on Friday and threw stones damaging some window panes.
Police have beefed up security around the consulate.
