Woman sentenced to life for child's murder

Chennai: A city court on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old woman to life for murdering a three-year-old boy last year to take revenge against her paramour.

The accused, an employee of a private company, strangled the boy and stuffed the body in a suitcase, which she later left in a Nagapattinam-bound bus on July 19, 2010. She was later arrested.

When the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, sixth Additional Sessions Judge R Sethumadhavan convicted the woman under IPC Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and sentenced her to life.

The Judge also found her guilty for an offence under IPC Section 364 (Kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) and convicted and sentenced her to seven years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000.

Both the sentences will run concurrently.
