10 held for attack in elopement case

Muzaffarnagar: Ten relatives of a girl who eloped with a boy from a different caste have been arrested for forcefully evicting the boy's family from their house in Chitoda village in the district, police said today.

The girl had eloped with the boy from the same village about a month ago as her family was opposed to their relationship since the boy belonged to a different caste, Deputy SP Jawaharlal said.

The girl's family pressurized the boy's parents to return their daughter and a community panchayat had given an ultimatum to the boy's family to hand over the girl to her parents till Eid, threatening to expel them from the village.

Since the girl did not return to her parents, her relatives yesterday attacked the house of her companion and forcefully evicted his family members, Jawaharlal said.
