Purulia:
Eleven infants died within 24 hours in a hospital in West Bengal's Purulia last week.
The deaths of the infants - seven of who were less than 11 months old - were reported between Friday and Saturday.
According to the hospital superintendent Nilanjana Sen, at least one of the infants succumbed to meningitis, two had congenital defects and the others had very low birth weight.
Most of the infants had been brought to the hospital in very critical condition, she said.
A government hospital in Malda district had reported 16 deaths last month, prompting the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to seek a report from the state government.
