12 killed in two accidents in Maharashtra

Maharashtra: Twelve people were killed and one person was injured in two accidents -- one on Solapur Road in Pune district and the other near Sawarde village of Ratnagiri district on Tuesday, police said.

Seven people were killed in the accident near Indapur town, 140 km from Pune as a truck and a car collided head on. The dead were the passengers and the driver of the car.


"All seven members of two families were killed in the accident. The truck driver is absconding," an official from Indapur police station said.

Those killed have been identified as Vasant Kulkarni, 65, Veena Kulkari, 60, Vinayak Kulkarni, 16, Nitin Bairath, 48, Srikant Bairath, 45, Vidya Bairath, 43, and Shruti Bairath, 12.

In the other similar accident near Chiplun, 75 km from the district headquarters of Ratnagiri, a truck collided with a car, killing five passengers of the car and injuring one.

"The car and the truck, coming from opposite directions, collided with each other this afternoon, killing all but one in the car," an official from Chiplun police station said.

"We are yet to identify those killed in the accident. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination," the official added.
