14-yr-old fights armed robbers, nabs one

Mumbai:
In his place, any other teenybopper would probably have chickened out. Far from it, Malad resident Amit Singh not only looked the armed robbers in the eye, he even mustered courage to catch hold of one of them and get him arrested. (Pic Courtesy: Mid-Day.com)

The drama unfolded around 3 pm yesterday at Hareshwar Apartments in Somwadi Bazar in Malad (W). Just as a tired Amit got home from school, he saw three men fiddling with the locked door of his neighbour.

"On seeing me, they started running downstairs, said Amit, who lives on the sixth floor. I chased them and grabbed one on the fourth floor, but he punched me and fled," said Amit.

Despite the assault, Amit, a Std VIII student of STS Mission School in Malad, kept up the chase. While on his way down, he kept knocking at doors, hollering along to alert people taking their afternoon siesta.

On the first floor, the thief tripped and fell. Seizing the opportunity, Amit grabbed him by the collar.

By then, a few neighbours had come out and all of us managed to overpower him, said Amit. The arrested accused, Sonu Singh (30), was handed over to the police.

"I always knew my son was courageous. Today, he has made me proud," said the boy's father, Surendra Singh.

"I was not at all scared though I knew the thieves were carrying knives," said Amit.

The neighbour, Pradeep Patel, whose house was being targeted is thankful. "I leave for work early in the morning and get home late. The thieves must have watched my timings".

The boy has shown exemplary courage and alertness. Thanks to him, we have been able to nab the thief. Earlier, a similar robbery had taken place in this building, but we could not nab the culprit, said Police Sub-Inspector Manohar Harpude.
