Coimbatore:
An 18-month-old baby boy died in Coimbatore on Wednesday after he was allegedly hit by a police jeep.
The jeep reportedly hit the baby, playing in front of his house at Anna Nagar in Ukkadam. He was rushed to a private hospital and later to a government hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, police said.
Enraged over the death, some 150 persons, including a few from two political parties, gathered near the government hospital, where the post-mortem is being carried out and also at the accident spot.
City Police commissioner A K Vishwanathan and other senior officials visited the spot and assured them that action would be taken following which the crowd disbursed.
Later, the jeep driver, Murugesh was arrested. A case under section 304 A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code was registered against him, police said.
