19-year-old girl gangraped in moving bus, killed

Bhadrak , Odisha: A 19-year-old college girl was allegedly gangraped in a moving bus and then murdered in Bhadrak district of Odisha. The incident comes days after the alleged rape of a Dalit girl in Puri district in the state.

The victim, a first-year student of Bhadrak Autonomous College and a resident of Ranipur, had boarded a private bus to return to her village around 5.30 pm on Tuesday evening. The girl, however, did not reach home.

Two hours later, two young men brought the girl to the government hospital at Agarpada. She was in an unconscious state. "They ran away from the hospital leaving behind their motor bike after doctors declared the girl dead," her father claimed.

"My daughter was raped in the running bus before being killed," he alleged.

"The police have arrested the driver (Raghunath Nayak) and the conductor (Kartik Chandra Hazira) of the bus," SP Chintamani Panda said. A case of rape, murder and kidnapping has been registered, he added.

Angry over the incident, students of Bhadrak Autonomous College staged a demonstration in front of the SP's office and blocked the road between Bhadrak and Agarpada for about two hours on Wednesday.
