Cuttack: A 20-year-old girl was found dead near a hostel in the Sailabala Women's College campus in Cuttack, police said on Monday.
While fellow-students and college authorities claimed that the death could have been due to accidentally falling off the hostel roof, her father said she did not commit suicide.
Informed by college authorities, the police retrieved the body of Swayamsiddha Sahu, a Plus III first year science student, with severe wounds to the head.
"We are investigating into the matter to ascertain the cause of death," said the Cuttack DCP S Praveen Kumar.
Swayamsiddha was from Jaipur and her examinations were on, said her friends.
The girl's father, Hridananda Sahu, who reached Cuttack after hearing the incident, said her daughter had been a brilliant student throughout. "I had talked to her over telephone and she was perfectly okay. She cannot commit suicide," he said.
"The police must investigate the case properly to ascertain the cause of the death," he said.
