28 years, no trial yet in Goddess theft

Allahabad: Twenty-eight years after an idol was stolen from an ancient temple at Allahabad, a Delhi court has still not been able to frame charges in the case against the accused, including an international project consultant, for trading in antique items.

The CBI, which registered an FIR on August 26, 1981 on a letter from the director of Archaeological Survey of India, had failed to initiate the trial in the case even as two accused had been declared proclaimed offenders and one had died.

Two other accused Jhammu Lal and Kanshi Nath, along with international consultant Srikant Jain, from whom the idol of Goddess Durga was recovered when he was trying to board a flight to the US with 14 other antique items, are out on bail.
