Bodies of two children have been recovered.
Srinagar:
Three school children were washed away in Batote area of Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district after heavy rains and cloud burst triggered flash floods in the area on Thursday. Officials said the rescue operations were immediately launched and bodies of two children have been recovered.
14-year-old Rakesh Kumar, 13-year-old Payal and five-year-old Sivalo Devi were returning from school and crossing a rivulet when flash floods washed them away near Batote along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
"Bodies of two children have been recovered and searches are on to recover the body third child," said Ajaz Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner of Ramban.
In most areas of Ramban district and other parts of the mountainous Chenab valley region, children have to cross nallahs and rivulets to reach their schools.
Flash floods have also blocked the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Batote. Officials says floods triggered avalanches and blocked the highway.
"Efforts are on to clear the highway and restore traffic," said Mr Ahmad.
