Thane: A 30-year-old man was shot dead by four unidentified assailants in Shahapur taluka of Thane district, police said on Wednesday.
While Umesh Gaikar and his friend stopped their motorbike at a petrol pump in Khativali near Vashind on Tuesday afternoon, four people got down from Esteem car and shot Umesh from point blank range, Shahapur police inspector Ganpat Pingle said.
While the victim collapsed on the spot, the assailants fled in the car.
The body has been sent for postmortem and search for the killers is on, police said adding that an old enmity was suspected to be the cause of the murder.
Incidentally, a BJP leader from Shahapur, Sanjay Dhumal, was killed sometime back and Umesh was arrested in that connection, but he later secured a bail.
