Muvattupuzha : Battling complications of age, a 58-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy at a hospital in the Ernakulam district of Muvattupuzha, officials said on Wednesday.
The baby, weighing 2.3 kg, was born through a caesarean section on Monday, Head of Reproductive Medicine team of St George hospital here Dr S Sabine told PTI.
The woman, Cicly, underwent Hormone Replacement Treatment to prepare her uterus for the pregnancy before she conceived through the In Vitro fertilsation (IVF), he said.
Cicly suffered mild diabetes and hyper tension. Normally during the last three to four weeks of pregnancy, there was high incidence of neo-natal complications, Sabine said.
"She came in with pain and an emergency caesarean was performed her on Monday and the baby delivered, 24 days ahead of the due date. The baby is healthy and matured and has not been kept in the incubator", he said.
Cicly's elder son had died many years ago at the age of three and second son died at the age of 16 in an accident at a waterfall in 2008.
She and her husband then decided to go in for another child, he said.
In 2002, 62-year-old Bhavaniamma, also from Muvattupuzha had given birth to a baby boy. However, at the age of four, the baby drowned in a bucket of water in his house.
