AC coach attendants turn thief

Mumbai: The next time you travel in a luxurious air-conditioned compartment of the railways, be careful. For the person responsible for tending you may have an eye on your belongings and valuables.

In less than a month, the Railway police have arrested two coach attendants who had stolen valuables from commuters in the train.

"These attendants should be taught a lesson. We spend so much money for buying tickets and for a tension-free sleep. But going by these incidents, I think we will have to be more careful, and keep an eye on our own belongings," said a commuter from Kurla who lost his mobile phone in the II tier AC of the Devgiri Express.

Vasudev Changare, an ex-MLA from Jalgaon, was travelling to Mumbai from Aurangabad on July 12. He had to get down at Dadar but he couldn't and got down at CST.

"I was wearing a gold and rudraksha chain, which I had kept under my pillow at night, but forgot about it while I was getting off.

When I realised, I went back, and took the yard in-charge to look for my chain, but couldn't found it," said Changare. He then made a written complaint to the CST railway police.

Pradeep Shinde, a railway inspector from CST said, "We searched the coach, but couldn't find anything. We found it later in the bag of a coach attendant. The attendant, Sanjeevaya Surabhay Didla (45) was arrested, and is now out on bail. What's surprising is that he has been assigned to the same coach as an attendant."

Shinde has also written a letter to senior railway officials, asking them not to recruit unqualified and unknown persons.

"We have asked them that there should be a police verification, GRP and area police NOCs, and correct address of the person and his relatives. He should also be educated and should be courteous to the commuter. He should also be able to understand the commuter," added Ravindra Darekar, another official from the CST railway police.
