ACs banned during peak hours in UP

Lucknow: In the wake of continuing acute power crisis in the state, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has decided to ban use of airconditioners during peak hours from 6 PM to 10 PM, officials said here on Saturday.

"The UPPCL had submitted a proposal seeking permission to ban use of airconditioners during evening hours with UP State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which has been approved," they said.

As per the proposal, use of AC at residential, commercial and office places in the state would be banned between 6 PM to 10 PM till July 15.

Similar, restrictions would be applicable on the use of commercial glow signs and other decorative lights during evening hours, they said.

"Violation of the order would attract a penalty of Rs 300 per AC for the domestic consumers and Rs 500 for commercial consumers using decorative display boards," they said.

UPSERC has given permission to continue with the ban till July 15 but said it could be withdrawn earlier if power situation in the state improves.

"At present as against the peak hours demand of around 9,000 MW, only 6,500 MW power is available leaving a gap of 2,500 MW," a senior UPPCL officer said.
