Action against disfigurement of public buildings

Puducherry: Chief Electoral Officer of Puducherry Belatee Pertin today said strict action would be taken against political parties defacing public buildings or erecting cut-outs and banners under provisions of the Puducherry Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 2000.

In a release here, he said as per Election Commission's directives, Collectors of Puducherry and Karaikal have been asked to constitute squads, comprising personnel of PWD, police, Revenue and Local Administration Departments and remove all banners, posters and other graffiti. They should also ensure no party defaced public buildings, erected cut-outs or banners.

Puducherry and its outlying regions of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam will go to the Assembly polls on April 13. A statutory notification setting the poll process in motion will be issued on March 19.

Pertin said all political parties and government machinery should strictly adhere to the model code of conduct and added that details had already been circulated to all concerned.

He said the Union Territory, with 30 Assembly seats spread over Puducherry (23), Karaikal (five), Mahe and Yanam (one each) has a total voter strength of 8,05,545.

The Election department would keep updating the voters list till March 26, the last date for filing of nominations, he said.
