Ahmedabad man kills wife, attempts suicide

Ahmedabad: He married the love of his life only to brutally kill her 13 years later. Dharmesh Thakker thrashed his wife with an iron pipe in a fit of rage.

Later, when he learned of her death, he tried to kill himself by jumping into the Sabarmati River. The man survived the suicide bid and his story has left two police station officials surprised.

On Sunday morning Dharmesh spotted his wife Hema near her house at Raipur, in Khadia police station area, and thrashed her with an iron pipe.

Some locals, who were present at the crime scene, rushed Hema to VS Hospital where she died on Sunday night. Meanwhile, Dharmesh who had fled from the scene came to know of his wife's death and decided to jump from the Ellisbridge to end his own life. "But he was saved and sent to Ellisbridge police station for attempting suicide," said police.

Then Ellisbridge police came to know that Dharmesh was wanted for the murder of his wife by the Khadia police. Dharmesh was later handed over to the Khadia police while Ellisbridge police lodged a case against him for attempting suicide.

According to Khadia police, Dharmesh and Hema were in love with each other and tied the knot in 1997. But the couple could not have children and this led to constant fights between them. "Five years ago, the couple began fighting with each other. Dharmesh used to be abusive towards Hema. When his abuses became intolerable Hema left him to live with her father," said a cop. The cop said that on Sunday, Dharmesh called her several times but she refused to take his call.

"This annoyed Dharmesh and he went to Hema's house and beat her with an iron pipe which finally killed her," a cop said.
