Armed with a fake degree, he set out to be a doctor

Delhi: This might come as a bitter pill to swallow, but your doctor, who you trust with your life, could be a fake. And the number of black sheep in this noble profession, who would have a hard time distinguishing your pulse from your wristwatch, is growing every day.

A medical student of Xaviers International University of Goa was arrested in Delhi on Monday after the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) found out that the MBBS holder, who had come to the Council with the intention of practicing medicine, was using a forged medical certificate, procured from Bihar Medical Council.

Even the university from where he had studied, was not accredited for the course.

According to Dr Girish Tyagi, registrar of the Delhi Medical Council, Mohammed Imdad Alam had come to the Council with his MBBS degree from Xaviers International University, Goa and also a Bihar Medical Council certificate (no. 32310) and had approached them for the registration certificate to practice in the Capital.

On verification, the DMC officials discovered that Alam was using a fake registration certificate and even his degree from Xaviers was not in compliance with the syllabus of MBBS.

"When we checked Alam's medical certificate, it somehow appeared fake. While we were verifying his credentials, we found that the papers belonged to another doctor and he had forged them. We also checked his degree and discovered that the subjects taught at the university did not match with an MBBS course. The institute was awarding MBBS degree without teaching subjects like medical surgery, pharmacology, microbiology, eye, ENT and forensic medicine," explained Tyagi.

"The university was not even listed as one of the institutes eligible for awarding an MBBS degree," added Tyagi.

Sources in the police said that they had written to their higher officials to stop the institute from awarding  an MBBS degree without proper infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Alam was immediately arrested and was handed over to the IP police station. A case under Section 420, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him.
