Bangalore:
Thirty one-year-old Nautinder Singh, a jawan of 27 Punjab Regiment of the Army, was killed by a gang of robbers in a shocking incident at the Railway station on Sunday afternoon.
Singh had rushed to help a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable nab four robbers who had robbed a group of young women travellers of mobile phones and cash at knife-point.
Singh had just arrived in Bangalore to attend a training camp at Army Service Corps (ASC) Centre. He was waiting for an Army transport to pick him up at about 3 pm when the incident happened. Eye-witnesses said that RPF constable SS Ramachandra chased the gang and caught two robbers near the portico of City Railway Station. The two attacked Ramachandra with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds on him.
Singh, who was standing a few metres away, rushed to Ramachandra's help to single-handedly deal with the four-member gang. One of the miscreants was a woman, later identified as Rajeshwari, a sex worker.
The robbers stabbed Singh in the heart and escaped, leaving the soldier to die on the spot. Surprisingly, none of the women who first complained to Ramachandra were found after the incident, the police said.
Singh's body was taken to the nearby Railway Hospital. Ramachandra was rushed to Apollo Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, where he was admitted in a critical condition. The police identified another gang member, Guru, and launched a manhunt to nab all the four.
RPF sub-inspector, Rahmathulla Khan, said "The soldier's body will be handed over to the Army personnel after the post-mortem."
