When she was two days old, she was buried alive by her grandfather behind the hospital where her mother was recovering from a premature delivery. She was then rescued by a stranger. But she has died because of a fracture she sustained when she was shoved into the pit that was meant to kill her.
Sangeeta Devi gave birth to twins at the BCM hospital in the Sitapur district of UP on May 1. Her son was stillborn. Her daughter was declared weak by doctors. So Sangeeta Devi's father, Deo Chandra, took the tiny girl to a pit he dug specially for her. Two other family members helped him push the baby inside.
A taxi driver named Sharif observed them. He waited till the men had left the spot, pulled out the baby, and found her still breathing. He rushed her to the same hospital where she had been born. She died yesterday.
Deo Chandra has been arrested.
