Chennai:
Dutch national Will Heume, accused of paedophilia and child pornography using Indian orphans has been granted bail. The reason - Chennai police has not been able to file Heume's charge sheet even 80 says after arresting him.
The police say forensic examination of the evidence in cases such as these require time, and argue it's more a case of thorough investigation than shoddy investigation.
''It's not a delay actually. This takes time. We should get it in 10 days. The evidences we have, like the computer hard disc and others are quite strong. That's why we are waiting for the report,'' said T. Rajendran, Chennai Police Commissioner.
Will Heume, a social worker from Holland made India his home thirty years ago. He started an orphanage in Mahabalipuram, where in 2002 he was accused of sexually abusing some children.
That case was still in court when in November 2009, the police found he was uploading child pornography pictures on the Net from home and arrested him.
''Child sexual abuse charges against maybe a repeat offender have to be looked at quite differently by the judicial process,'' said Vidya Reddy, an activist.
The pressure is now mounting on the Chennai police to ensure that Will Heume is brought to justice.
