Bangalore Metro's dream coaches unveiled

Bangalore: The wait is over and Bangaloreans will soon see their dream Metro coaches running on shiny new tracks. The first Metro coach, which was transported to Bangalore from Chennai port, was offloaded from lorries on to tracks at the Byapannahalli Metro depot on Monday morning.

It came wrapped in a dark coloured tarpaulin, which was removed before unloading began. As soon as the cover was lifted, enthusiastic officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), members of the consortium and transporters started capturing the historical moment for Bangalore on their mobile phone cameras.

The other two coaches being brought in two lorries are stationed near KR Puram and will reach the depot by Monday night. "On Tuesday morning we will offload the other two coaches and couple them. By the month end, the testing team from the consortium will test the train," said a BMRCL spokesperson.

However, the track where the coach was offloaded and will be tested is yet to be electrified for the testing. The first coach stationed at the metro depot is a Driver Motor Car with a seating capacity of 43 and standing 273. The body of the coach is made of light metal but the engines, wheels and machinery beneath are heavy. While it also operates on battery, the coach will be initially moved manually to the track and later coupled with the other two.

The other two coaches comprise of one DMC and one trailer car. The consortium comprises of BEML (India), Hyundai Rotem (Korea), MELCO (Japan) and Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), who have been contracted to manufacture and supply 150 of such coaches."By Tuesday Bangalore's first Metro train will be in the depot. The next train will be here by December. We are happy to transport it safely to Bangalore," said Dee Y Lee, project manager of the consortium.
