Bangalore: This Deepavali, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued strict guidelines to limit air and noise pollution.

At the launch of Pollutech India 2010, a two-day workshop on environment and pollution, organised by KSPCB and Bangalore Media Centre, minister of environment and muzrai Krishna J Palemar appealed to the public to plant trees as they would help in curtailing air and noise pollution.

KSPCB has also issued orders to restrict bursting of crackers above 125 decibels and limited that activity to 10 pm.

KSPCB chairman, AS Sadashivaiah told DNA that they would also be measuring the air quality on that day at various strategic locations through mobile vans.

Though the bursting of crackers has been limited, it cannot be completely restricted as it may hurt the religious sentiments of people. The department also aims to reduce the use of plastic bags. In order to educate people about the hazards of bursting crackers, the department is seeking the help of NGOs, youth, over 4.5 lakh NSS students, three lakh scouts and guides, civil defence wardens and environmentalists.

According to KSPCB data, considering that 40% of the Ganeshas used for Ganesh Chaturthi this year were either eco-friendly or made of metals, an increasing number of people have turned to eco-friendly festival celebrations.

Sadashivaiah said the local police and KSPCB can be approached in case one finds law-violators. They will be booked under the Air Pollution Act of 1986. k_bosky@dnaindia.net
