Bar Council issues showcause notice to advocate

Kochi: Bar Council of Kerala today slapped a showcause notice on Advocate K Thavamony, who in a controversial move visited the residence of a sitting judge of the state high court hearing the Abkari cases, asking him to answer charges of professional misconduct.

In suo motu proceedings, council Secretary K Ajayan issued notice to the advocate asking him to give his explanation within 15 days, bar council sources said.

Mr Thavamony visited Justice C T Ravikumar, who was hearing a batch of petitions relating to renewal of licenses of 418 bars in the state, allegedly to discuss about the case.

Justice Ravikumar had yesterday recused himself from the case and recalled his judgement shortly before it was to be pronounced.

The court had heard the petitions continuously till April 11, the last working day after which the court closed for summer vacation.

Taking everyone by surprise, justice Ravikumar yesterday said he was avoiding hearing the case. 'Common judgement in the case is yet to be signed', the judge said while recalling the judgement.

According to the Judge, Mr Thavamony, came to his residence yesterday and attempted to speak about the issue touching the case.
