The first year student's condition is reportedly critical.
Bengaluru: A first year BSc nursing student, Thamari Chelvan, was found hanging in his college's hostel room on the morning of 28th January in Bengaluru. Chelvan is still unconscious and hospitalized in Manipal hospital.
His family alleges the young man tried to kill himself because he was being harassed, seemingly by his hostel mates.
The family alleges that his batchmates were trying to extort money from him. The boy's mother, Nagarathna, said her son had wanted to leave the hostel because four boys from his college kept asking him for money. She added, "He wanted to be a doctor but did not get enough marks in school so joined BSc nursing. He insisted on studying in Bangalore. He said he wanted to go for higher studies too."
His father, Thirumurugan, said, "Because he couldn't pay the money, he felt threatened - and might have thought it was better to kill himself."
Police have registered a case of criminal intimidation. Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, said, "Right now the case is registered for 504, 506, which is criminal intimidation. The boy had spoken to his parents and said 3-4 boys were harassing him for money. We have also recorded the statement of his friends who have mentioned a verbal quarrel between him and the accused students. We will also look in to the aspect whether there was any negligence on the part of the management."
The young boy's condition continues to be critical.
