Bhopal: Monuments out, car parks in

Bhopal: The 150-year-old Post Masters General's residence in Bhopal has been razed to the ground. The next targets are the colonial post office, the 19th century Jumerati Gate, a rare piece of Indo-Afghan architecture. And the 166-year-old Sheesh Mahal, part of the establishment of the royalty, where poet Iqbal once lived.

All these monuments are being demolished to make way for car parks.

"The dilapidated buildings will be razed to the ground. Most of the space will be used to create parking lots," says Urban Administration Minister, Madhya Pradesh.

These monuments are not in the archaeological records of Madhya Pradesh or the Centre and hence of no value, says the government. But what about the hundreds of people, who stay and work in these pieces of living heritage?

''We will not let them demolish Sheesh Mahal. After some days, they will create multiplexes on the land,''' says Rafiqa, a zari artisan.

These architectural beauties neglected for years still form the character, the identity of Bhopal. To erase history for parking lots seems bizarre! Can anyone help protect these jewels of Madhya Pradesh?
