Blind tribal woman dragged to death in Madhya Pradesh

Shivpuri, MP: In a gruesome incident, a blind old woman died after she was dragged around in a village in the district by a muscleman using a tractor, police said today.

The incident occurred on July 24 at Vapawali village when a group of persons were consuming liquor and a tribal person identified as Ramlal happened to pass by the place, following which the trouble began, they said.

A muscleman, Bhupendra Thakur felt offended by it and allegedly started beating the tribal man. Somehow, when he managed to escape the scene and reach home, Thakur drove a tractor to his residence and started pelting stones following which Ramlal's 65-year-old mother came out.

Thakur then hit her with the tractor during which her saree got entangled in the vehicle. He allegedly began dragging her in the village till she got seriously injured.

Later, villagers rushed the woman in a serious condition to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead.

On the complaint of the family members of the woman, police initially registered a case of accident against Thakur, but when the villagers protested, charges of murder were also slapped against him.

Later, Superintendent of Police R P Singh asked the Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) to conduct an inquiry into the incident and also probe the role of the Khod Police Post In-charge Nagendra Singh behind the incident.

The accused is absconding since the incident and searches are on to nab him, police added.
