Mumbai:
Two youth kidnapped and allegedly raped a teenage girl in Mumbai, and then sold their mobile phones when they ran out of money to keep her in custody for 15 days.
The accused allegedly whisked away the 15-year-old victim to Solapur first. They then fled to Kalyan, where they rented a room and repeatedly raped the girl.
The police rescued the girl and arrested the boys on Tuesday.
The duo told the police that they had sold their mobiles, when they realised they had no money to pay the rent for the room in Kalyan.
The victim's father, a businessman from Goregaon, had filed a missing complaint with the Bangur Nagar Link Road police station, when his daughter failed to return home from tuition.
During investigations, the police found that the two teenaged boys were also missing from the same locality.
According to API Dhananjay Ligade of Bangur Nagar police station, one of the boys identified as Imran Shaikh , and his 17-year-old accomplice had abducted the victim and taken her to Solapur.
"We had made arrangements to trace the mobile phones of the boys but they were switched off. By the time we reached Solapur, the boys had already fled," said Ligade.
The cops then got a tip-off that the kidnappers were in Kalyan, so a police team was rushed there. "The boys were about to flee but we nabbed them at the Kalyan railway station," added Ligade.
The boys confessed to the police that Shaikh was in love with the girl and had kidnapped her after she rejected his proposal.
The boys were presented before the Borivli Court and remanded to police custody till June 1. The girl has been sent for a medical examination.
