Bullet extricated from ex-serviceman's body after 17 years

Khanna, Punjab: A bullet lodged in the body of an ex-serviceman for as many as 17 years was extricated today at Civil Hospital in Khanna.

Two bullets had already been taken out of 43-year-old Raghbir Singh's body in 1994 when he was admitted to a hospital at Doda in Jammu and Kashmir.

Raghbir Singh heaved a sigh of relief when the one-inch bullet was taken out from his body yesterday in a 20-minute operation at the Civil Hospital.

Singh, a resident of village Kakrala near Samrala district of Ludhiana, said three bullets hit him during an encounter between BSF jawans and militants on January 19, 1994 at Doda, in which five security men were killed while he and another jawan were seriously injured.

Singh said though one bullet remained in his body, he served for 16 years before retiring on July 31, 2010.

Doctors detected the bullet after he complained of pain in one leg shortly after retirement.
