Coimbatore: Irate public and relatives set on fire a private mini-bus after it ran over two persons, including a woman, at Kanuvani on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Monday, police said.
According to police, 28-year-old Sujit Kumar was with his girl friend on a motorcycle when the bus hit it, killing him on the spot. Though the people rushed the profusely bleeding girl, she was declared brought dead at a Government hospital, they said.
Enraged by the incident, a section of public and relatives of the deceased, torched the bus and stoned another bus belonging to the same company.
However, some others put off the fire and sat on the road, to bring the attention of the district administration to the poor condition of the road, which is being relaid, as part of widening to link it to the Highway.
Senior police officials rushed to the spot and persuaded the public to disperse. The bus driver was arrested, police said.
