Hyderabad: The body of a 17-year-old canoeing trainee was on Friday recovered from Hussainsagar lake in the heart of the city.
Ranjan, hailing from Nagaland, drowned in the lake on Thursday while practising on his canoe apparently without a life jacket.
Search by special teams of military and police personnel till late Thursday evening proved futile. They resumed the search on Friday morning and retrieved the body.
Ranjan, a trainee of Water Sports Training Club of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, came to the city six months ago, and paddled into the lake with 10 other canoeists.
Police said the teenager might have slipped into the water after the canoe tilted. A labourer near Sanjeevaiah Park alerted the police when he saw the trainee drowning.
Officials at the sports authority said it was the first such accident death.
The Water Sports Training Club has been asked to take all precautions during such training sessions in future.
