Car thieves dial wrong number

Mumbai: While the market for second-hand vehicles is booming, the police advised caution while purchasing such vehicles and are asking prospective owners to check the documents properly.

On Tuesday, negligence caused grief to the owner of a vehicle. The traffic police found two cars -- an Innova and an Alto, parked in 'no parking zone' at Shivaji Path -- with the same number.

While owner of one car had proper registration papers; the owner of another vehicle was arrested for not possessing legal documents. Both vehicles had the same registration number (MH-04-DJ-6152).

Police found that Innova was registered with Regional Transport Office in the name of Anusaya Patil, a resident of Ghodbunder Road.

Patil produced all legal documents; however Sanjay Sonar, owner of the Alto, could not produce any papers.

Sonar said that he bought the car from a Bhandup-based dealer three years ago. While the agent gave him the number of the car, he claimed that the vehicle's papers were lost.

Later Sonar filed a case of missing documents at Vartak Nagar police station in 2008.

Thane police are investigating the matter and suspect the hand of an organised crime racket.

"This incident is an eye-opener for second-hand car buyers. Such incidents happen only when people don't bother about getting original documents of vehicles while sealing a deal," said Nilesh Raut, inspector from Thane Town police station.

He added, "People must insist on original documents of second-hand vehicles. If someone is selling them at cheaper rates, then there is a high possibility that they are being cheated."
