Delhi:
A credit card can mean uninhibited retail therapy, especially if the plastic money doesn't belong to you.
MiD DAY has exclusive video footage of a group of youth, all in their early twenties, entering a shop at Great India Place mall in Noida Sector-18 and spending Rs 27,000 on various items with a State Bank of India credit card. What's interesting is that the card was stolen from a 29-year-old man a few days ago.
The victim was unaware of the entire incident. He came to know about everything only on August 2, when he received a message on one of the transactions made through his card.
"The message received at around 10:30 in the night said that purchases worth Rs 9121 had been made with my credit card. I was naturally stunned," said Deepak Upadhyay, who works with a media organisation.
"As I was trying to figure out the entire matter, I received another message. This time the amount spent was Rs 1189. I immediately called up a customer care executive and asked for my card to be blocked," added Deepak.
However, that was not all. The next day when he started investigating, Deepak came to know that a group of seven youths had gone shopping to Great India Place, with his credit card. Out of the seven youngsters, all in their early twenties, three were women.
All the youths entered Great India Place mall at around 10 in the night. Two of them went to a shop and bought two bags worth Rs 1900. "The shop was almost closed. But the duo entered and requested us to reopen the outlet. They said that as they were going for a foreign visit, they immediately needed to buy a bag. One of them was in shorts and the other in jeans and T-shirt," said, Rahul, the salesman who was on duty.
After purchasing the bag, they headed towards another shop in the mall. There they purchased apparels worth Rs 21,000. Four different transactions were made from the shop between 10:30 and 11 in the night. The amounts for the transactions were Rs 9121, Rs 6320, Rs 1189, Rs 4186, at 10:30pm, 10:45pm, 10:50pm and 11:01pm respectively.
"I was really surprised that Rs 27,000 was spent from my credit card but I received messages for only two of the purchases made. Moreover representatives from the shops where the transactions were made, never bothered to match the signature behind the card. The signature on the invoice is completely different," said Deepak.
A senior police officer from Noida sector 39 said: "We have received the CCTV footage and are investigating the matter. We have contacted the bank officials as well as the mall authorities. However we don't have any leads yet."
