Chengalpet, Chennai:
A law student Ashok Kumar was allegedly tortured by the police outside Chennai. He was earlier involved in a brawl in a bus, first passengers beat him up and later at the police station, the men in khaki allegedly stripped him and ganged up against him. Hours later, the injured student attempted suicide at a hospital and is still in a coma.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has ordered release of funds for the victim's medical expenses.
Based on Ashok Kumar' complaint FIR have been filed against seven police men including two Sub Inspectors for causing hurt and abusing the young man.
"They removed his underwear and beat him up. They broke his tooth. He suffered serious injuries on his hand and legs. They've treated him like a terrorist," said Suryaprakash, Ramesh's brother.
"They've poured water on him and hit him with boots," said Jaya, Ramesh's mother.
Police officials refused to comment on the case.
Ashok is now battling at a private hospital in Chennai. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has ordered a probe.
There's growing public anger over incidents of alleged police brutality. Only last week human rights activists who probed an alleged case of torture by police were put behind bars in another part of the state.
