Chief Minister Raman Singh got me arrested for asking a question, alleges man

Raipur: A man has alleged that he was arrested and brutally beaten up by the police after he questioned Chief Minister Raman Singh at a farmer's rally in Raipur.

28-year-old Anwar Hussain, a member of the Youth Congress, rose from his seat and contested a claim made by the Chief Minister while the latter was addressing a public meeting on October 7. As Mr Hussain animatedly waved a blue file, questioning the Chief Minister on certain policies, the latter ordered the police to "take him away", saying "he is drunk". Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar was, incidentally, present when this incident happened.

The cops, Mr Hussain alleges, immediately arrested him, and later thrashed him in police custody. He was finally released on October 13. The cops kept him in detention for six days despite the fact that no First Information Report (FIR) had been filed against him.

Mr Hussain alleges that his hearing has been affected after he was beaten up by the cops. Doctors say that he has sustained injuries in both ears with a perforation in the left ear drum.

A similar incident had taken place in August this year when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered for the arrest of a farmer after he asked her a question at a public meeting at Belpahari in West Midnapore. An angry Ms Banerjee dubbed the farmer a "Maoist". The police immediately nabbed him but later freed him after some questioning. He, though, was arrested from his home a couple of days later for allegedly trying to disrupt the Chief Minister's meeting.
