Child killed, 4 injured as tea estate owner fires

Guwahati: A child was killed and four others injured on Monday when the owner of a tea estate allegedly fired at angry protesters, who also set ablaze two garden factories and the owner's residence, officials said.

The situation turned volatile after the owner of Rani Tea Estate forbade a woman from trespassing through his garden.

When angry estate labourers and locals gathered and protested the prevention of the women's movement through the garden, the owner fired at them killing a child on the spot and wounding four others, they said.

The irate mob then set on fire two of the factories and the residence of the garden owner, officials said adding, they also attempted to prevent the fire tenders from entering the garden.
