Krishnagar, West Bengal:
A female Chinese tourist drowned in the Bhagirathi river at the holy town of Nabadwip in Nadia district in West Bengal after she fell into the water from a boat, the police said on Wednesday.
The accident occurred when Wang Li Zhu (60), a member of a 30-member tourist group from China, was crossing the river to reach Nabadwip's Baralghat from Mayapur on Tuesday night.
The boat carrying the tourists jolted after it dashed against the jetty and the woman, who was at the edge of boat, lost her balance and fell into the river, sources said.
As passengers of the boat raised an alarm, locals dived into the river but failed to locate her. Her body was
found about an hour later.
Nabadwip is the birth place of 15th century social and religious reformer Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The tourists, who were Vaishnavites, were coming from Mayapur where the famous ISKCON temple is situated.
