City students send Diwali greetings to jawans

Pune: Students from various schools in the city have sent Diwali greetings to soldiers manning the border posts in remote areas of the country. The initiative was taken to reassure these brave men that civilians had not forgotten them while celebrating festivals like Diwali.

The Diwali greetings prepared by students were sent to border areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and parts of the North-East.

Sainik Mitra Parivar, an organisation working for the cause of servicemen and ex-servicemen as well as war-widows and family members of ex-servicemen, started sending Diwali greetings to jawans deployed in the border areas, taking a cue from the Akhil Sadashiv Peth Navratra Mahotsav.

Sainik Mitra Parivar has been sending rakhis to jawans for Rakshabandhan since 1998.

Parag Thakur, a member of the Sainik Mitra Parivar, said that almost 7,000 Diwali greetings prepared by students from various schools in the city would be sent to border areas by the end of Diwali.

He said that till date, more than 6,000 greetings have been sent and about 1,000 more would be received by the organisation in the next couple of days.

He said Grahak Peth had helped this campaign by giving money for postal expenses.

Genba Moze Prashala in Yerawada, Sundarbai Marathe Vidyalaya in Kharadi, Perugate Bhave School, Ramanbaug School, NMV High School, Pune Vidyarthi Gruha and Sarita Vidyalaya have sent greetings under this campaign.

Vidya Kavekar, a teacher from Marathe Vidyalaya, said one soldier had reciprocated by sending a new dress to one of the girls after receiving a greeting and a rakhi from her. Another jawan had sent a jewellery set to another girl.
