Mumbai:
If all goes as per plans, Nitin Junction Subway, the first pedestrian subway in Thane which is currently under construction, will be thrown open to public by the first week of December.
According to officials of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), of the 240 metres, work on only 17 metres is still pending.
"We should be able to complete the work by November-end. So, by the first week of December it will be opened for public," said KD Lala, city engineer, TMC.
With the completion of this subway, Thane will be able to boast of a state-of-art subway built on the lines of Metro subway in Mumbai.
The highlight is that the subway will have a provision for disabled-friendly chair lifts.
Moreover, frames for advertising and full-time security too will be made available at the subway.
The total cost of this subway is nearly Rs 4.5 crore.
The subway will be 240 metres long and four metres wide. It will have nine openings including an emergency exit.
The work on the subway began in November 2007.
Though, as per the schedule, the work was to be completed a year ago, it has been delayed owing to the shifting of utilities -- such as the water pipelines, telephone lines and power supply cables -- that are placed under the ground.
The subway seems to be the need of the hour as the heavy flow of traffic has made crossing the road difficult for pedestrians especially senior citizens.
After completion of Nitin Subway, the corporation also plans to construct a subway at Teen Haath Naka, Golden Dias and Cadbury Company Junction.
