Navi Mumbai:
A police constable has been arrested in Navi Mumbai for allegedly kidnapping a 29-year-old woman architect and extorting money from her.
On Tuesday, Santosh Narawade allegedly threatened the woman and asked her to accompany him on his motorbike by claiming that there was a case against her. The woman was allegedly waiting in an autorickshaw at the Seawoods railway station in Navi Mumbai at the time.
The cop also allegedly forced her to withdraw Rs 10,000 from an ATM and pay him as bribe to settle the "case".
However, the driver of the autorickshaw who allegedly saw the cop take the woman away with him reportedly informed her mother who then went to the Taloja police station, seeking to know why her daughter was picked up. The auto driver was able to alert the architect's mother since he used to regularly ferry them.
After going through CCTV footage from outside the railway station and the ATM, police arrested Narawade and registered a case of kidnapping and extortion against him.
The architect, a resident of Seawoods in Navi Mumbai, has recorded her statement with the police but has refused to comment on the case.
