Chennai: A police constable has been arrested here on charges of murdering a three-year-old girl.
According to police, the incident happened on Sunday when the constable Mariaselvam (33) tried to reach for a liquor bottle at the house of Selvi, whom he had befriended for some time, and fell on the three year-old Rishita, breaking her ribs.
When Rishita started crying, he closed her mouth and she died of suffocation, police said adding the accused later dumped the body in a nearby godown.
Selvi, who runs a small eatery, returned home to see her daughter missing and filed a police complaint. A team of cops launched a search and recovered the body of the girl.
During inquiry, it was revealed that Mariaselvam was last seen carrying the baby and upon interrogation he reportedly admitted to his crime.
Police later arrested him under murder charges.
They said that Selvi's husband was away in Mumbai for work and the accused had been frequenting Selvi's house.
