Cop serious, as stomach-runner misses the mark

Bangalore: In a shocking incident on Friday morning, a trainee police sub-inspector at the V Nagenahalli police training school in Gulbarga sustained severe injuries on his private parts during a "stomach toughening" exercise.

What's shocking is that it is the principal of the police training school S Ravi--former deputy commissioner of police (south), Bangalore-- who stomped on the stomachs of the police cadets after they were made to sleep on their backs following their routine morning jog to endure this exercise.

During Friday's stomach-stomping exercise, Ravi accidentally stepped on the private parts of one of the trainees.

Incidentally, trainee commandos in the army are also subject to this type of stomach-toughening training.

But what amounted to cruelty in this case was this: as the trainee sub-inspector writhed in pain and sought medical attention, Ravi refused permission for him to be transported to the hospital eight kilometres away in a department vehicle.

Ravi is alleged to have said: "There is no vehicle for your requirement. You have to run and go and return to the training school within an hour."

The unnamed victim said, "It was difficult for me to run eight km to the hospital, take treatment, and then return within an hour. So, I took treatment at the health centre instead." DNA learnt that this torturous exercise is a daily routine that the trainee sub-inspectors have to undergo at the V Nagenahalli police training school.

It has been going on for the past several days, some trainees told DNA from Gulbarga. When the trainees questioned his inhuman act, his matter-of-fact answer reportedly was: "Your stomachs have to be harder; at present they are soft, therefore I am doing this. It is part of the training."
Top police officer assures inquiry

The trainees refused to reveal the name of their injured course mate, fearing that it could ruin his future career prospects. Around 175 trainee sub-inspectors are being trained at the police training school in Gulbarga.

When DNA contacted ADGP (recruitment and training) ST Ramesh, the officer promised to look into the allegations against Ravi. "If an incident of this nature has indeed occurred, I will surely order for an inquiry," Ramesh said.
