Bangalore: Though robbery seems to be the motive behind the murder of a senior Infosys employee's wife in Bangalore, the police are also grilling the victim's husband and relatives.
The 27-year-old schoolteacher Priyanka Gupta was found brutally murdered at her home on Tuesday morning.
Investigating officers are suspecting Satish Gupta's involvement in his wife's murder. The reasons stated by a senior police officer are that Satish went for his morning walk wearing leather shoes despite having a number of pairs of sports shoes at home.
The accused do not seem to be professional killers, the police said. The items recovered from Guptas' residence seemed new.
The accused struck when the victim was alone at home and her husband was out for a morning walk.
According to the police, Priyanka's husband Satish was out when two people came to his house in Hulimavu at 5.30 am. They allegedly told Priyanka that they were selling subscriptions for a newspaper.
However, she grew suspicious and called Satish on his cellphone. He cautioned her not to open the door to anyone, a police officer said.
Around 6.30 am, when Satish returned home, he found the door locked and there was no answer after several knocks. He then called Priyanka on her cell, but she did not respond, the police said.
Satish then went over to his parents' house in Venkateshwara Layout. He took his father's car and drove to his office, where he kept a duplicate set of his house keys.
When he returned home, he found Priyanka dead, bound to a chair, the complaint stated. There were strangulation marks on her neck and her throat had been slit.
The police recovered a pair of gloves, leather jacket, jogging shoes, plastic rope and a kitchen knife from the house.
The police are not ruling out any angle.
Though robbery seemed to be the apparent motive, with Rs 2 lakh in cash and gold valuables missing from the house, the murder could have been the handiwork of someone who was known to the Guptas.
The Bangalore South East police have formed a special team to investigate the case.
Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said, "At this moment, it's difficult to state the exact motive behind the murder. We are investigating the matter."
Priyanka's body was sent to Victoria hospital for an autopsy. She hailed from Lucknow and the couple was married for three years. They did not have any children. She was working with Delhi Public School, Konanakunte. The police are waiting for Priyanka's parents to arrive.
