Jajpur, Odisha: Facing opposition from their families to their marriage, a young couple committed suicide by jumping before a speeding train near Gadamadhupur railway station in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said today.
The two took the drastic step on Monday by jumping before the Bhadrak-Paradeep passenger train at Barada Chhak near Gadamadhupur railway station.
Jajpur Keonjhar Road railway police station officer-in-charge Prafulla Kumar Sahu said a hand-written note believed to be written by the lovers was recovered from the spot which stated that they were madly in love with each other but as their families did not approve of their marriage they preferred to end their lives.
The bodies were, however, taken away by their respective families before the police could reach the spot, he said.
Police said investigations carried out by it after the incident revealed that the two were in a relationship for a year and the girl's parents came to know of it when the boy came to meet her a fortnight ago.
The girl's father threatened the boy with dire consequences if he met his daughter again. The boy's parents too did not agree to his marrying the girl.
The boy was aged 23 years and the girl 19.
A case of unnatural death has been registered and further investigation is on, the police added.
