Court orders 15 lakh to boys' kin who died after falling in pit

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed MCD to pay compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the families of two boys whose bodies were found in a seven-feet deep pit dug by the civic body at Shakurpur area in December last year.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked MCD to give Rs 7.5 lakh to each victim and said the court would pass a detailed order later.

Expressing its displeasure over the status report filed by the SHO over the mishap earlier, the Bench directed the investigation to be carried out by the Crime Branch.

The Bench took suo motu cognizance of the incident after bodies of Arishit (4) and Arman (8) were found floating in the pit, which was dug up by MCD workers and was filled with water up to five feet, on December 1, 2009.

The court's order of compensation came on a petition filed by the parents of the victims seeking the same.

Earlier, MCD had informed the court that it had suspended five of its staff members, including two Beldars and two gardeners who had dug up the pit.
